01 / Two different jobs
Mechanical treatment captures particles such as feces and uneaten feed. Biological filtration provides conditions for nitrification of dissolved ammonia. A settling vessel does not replace a biofilter, and a biofilter packed with trapped waste may lose effective oxygen and flow.
Different particles settle or filter differently. A radial-flow or settling separator targets settleable material; finer solids may need additional screening or filtration. Select equipment for expected flow and feed waste rather than its external barrel size.

02 / Make waste removal deliberate
Provide an accessible purge route that collects concentrated waste separately from the circulating crop water. Valves and unions should be reachable without moving fish tanks. Mark normal operating positions and the maximum safe purge duration.
Choose biofilter media by a manufacturer’s rated performance under stated temperature, oxygen, alkalinity and loading assumptions. Nominal surface area is not equivalent to effective treatment capacity. Preserve enough access to inspect distribution, clogging and air delivery.
- Map particles, dissolved nitrogen, purge water and clean return as separate paths.
- Verify separator flow and retained solids during startup observations.
- Measure purge volume and record the solids removal interval.
- Check that the biofilter receives distributed oxygenated water rather than a short-circuiting jet.
- Establish nitrification and verify the response to planned feed load before expanding.

03 / Maintain without resetting biology
Inspect mechanical collection frequently enough to prevent decomposing waste from accumulating. Clean or purge based on observed loading; a low-feed nursery and a heavily fed adult tank require different service. Replace exported water with prepared makeup water.
Protect biological media from chlorine, drying and unplanned full disinfection. When service is necessary, maintain aeration and follow a staged procedure suited to the filter. Test ammonia and nitrite after any major intervention.

04 / Mineralization is another managed process
Some systems separately process removed solids to recover additional nutrients. This requires its own oxygen, retention, hygiene and return-water controls. A bucket of rotting waste connected to the loop is not a controlled mineralization system.
For a first coupled system, prioritize dependable fish water and measured solids export. If adding recovery later, compare the returned nutrient benefit against oxygen demand, pathogens, labor and treatment complexity.
