AFTER THIS CHAPTER
  • Assign media-bed functions and limits.
  • Commission flood/drain behavior and overflow.
  • Maintain roots and microbes while removing excess solids.

01 / What the bed does

A media bed supports plants in aggregate while water brings dissolved nutrients through the root zone. Its wetted surfaces can also host nitrifying organisms. That does not make the bed an unlimited solids processor: retained waste consumes oxygen and can obstruct flow.

The teaching layout keeps a solids separator and a separate biofilter upstream. Small systems sometimes combine functions in the bed, but capacity must be established against feed input, media, flow and oxygen. Removing a separate filter because the bed looks large is not a validated design change.

02 / Choose aggregate and containment

Use clean, durable aggregate compatible with fish water. Examine particle size, fines, sharp edges, carbonate content and total saturated mass. Limestone-rich media can influence pH and alkalinity; decorative stone is not automatically appropriate for an aquaponic root zone.

The structure must support the bed, water, wet medium, plants and access loads. A shallow layer in a drawing is not a structural specification. Design drainage and a removable media guard so roots and stones cannot seal the standpipe or siphon.

  1. Prepare a representative aggregate sample and assess rinse water, stability and chemistry before filling the whole bed.
  2. Install a supported bed with accessible inlet, drain and independent overflow. Retain upstream waste collection in this layout.
  3. Test with plain water and the intended media. Record flood level, drainage time and the reservoir or sump level at each phase.
  4. Check the worst-case return volume and verify a stuck-on pump cannot overflow the bed.
  5. If using a siphon, prove reliable start and break across expected flow variation; keep a simple service procedure and inspectable emergency drain.

03 / Establish biological capacity

Cycle before stocking fish using a documented fishless procedure, test kit and known ammonia source intended for that use. Keep air and water moving. Track ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature and alkalinity through the establishment period.

A calendar date or a bottle of starter does not prove processing capacity. The cycling chapter describes repeated challenge-and-clearance observations before gradual stocking. If the media bed is the primary biofilter, cleaning all its surfaces at once can remove a major share of the working community.

04 / Plant and maintain the bed

Transplant clean starts with crowns above the wet surface. Keep the upper zone and drainage relationship defined by the bed design rather than allowing a constantly wet crown. Space plants for mature access and remove roots carefully at harvest so the plumbing remains clear.

Inspect accumulated solids at the inlet and around roots. Service the separator according to actual loading; exporting solids is part of nutrient and water accounting. Keep a record of purge volume and replacement water.

05 / Recognize accumulation

A bed that drains more slowly each month is giving useful evidence. Inspect roots, fines, deposits and the drain guard. Do not compensate indefinitely with more pump pressure or longer timing.

Dark stagnant pockets or unusual odor require investigation and controlled service. Avoid suddenly flushing an accumulated waste pocket through fish and biofilters. Isolate and collect the waste, maintain fish aeration, and test water after reconnecting.

FIELD QUESTIONCan the same bed be both root support and biofilter?

Yes, its surfaces can support nitrification, but usable capacity depends on loading, oxygen, water distribution and maintenance. Combining functions makes careful solids management and staged cleaning more important.

ILLUSTRATED SYSTEM INVENTORY

Parts & buying criteria

Showing aquaponic media bed. Quantities describe the teaching model. Specify real working volume, support, fittings and instruments for your installation.

01Fish tank1 · illustrated quantity+

Houses fish and receives the pumped return. Feed is an input to this living system.

Inspect: The fish are generic silhouettes, with no species or stocking-rate recommendation. Cutaway reveals the tank interior.

Maintain: Observe behavior and feeding response; keep a record of water tests and changes.

BUYING CRITERIA

Smooth accessible tank, secure cover and species-appropriate volume determined by an aquaculture design.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
02Solids separator1 · illustrated quantity+

Intercepts settleable waste before it accumulates in later treatment and growing components.

Inspect: Open the front of the vessel. Brown particles beneath the central baffle represent collected waste, not a settling simulation.

Maintain: Inspect accumulation and remove it on an observation-based schedule without flushing it into the growing bed.

BUYING CRITERIA

Accessible waste drain, removable internals and a design matched to expected solids and flow.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
03Biological filter1 · illustrated quantity+

Provides wetted surface for nitrifying organisms. This teaching layout shows a separate biofilter.

Inspect: The blue carriers indicate surface area; cyan flow does not measure nitrification or oxygen availability.

Maintain: Protect the established community during service. Verify nitrogen readings before and after changing loading or equipment.

BUYING CRITERIA

Media and aeration matched to the intended feed load, water conditions and an independently reviewed design.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
04Aggregate growing bed1 · illustrated quantity+

Supports plants in aggregate with a controlled drain; this layout retains upstream solids treatment and biofiltration.

Inspect: Cutaway reveals aggregate, planted roots and a screened drain. The water level is illustrative.

Maintain: Observe wetting, drain clearance and accumulated solids; preserve biological function through staged maintenance.

BUYING CRITERIA

Fish-compatible aggregate, verified saturated support load and accessible drain guard.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
05Sump & return pump1 · illustrated quantity+

Collects gravity drainage and pumps water to the fish tank, closing this particular circuit.

Inspect: This is the lowest collection point. The tank, filters and bed have progressively lower illustrative water levels.

Maintain: Check sump level, intake and leaks. Test whether drainage can be contained when power stops.

BUYING CRITERIA

Usable reserve volume, pump service access, level protection and verified delivery at the required head.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
06Air supply1 · illustrated quantity+

A separate air pump supplies diffusers to the fish tank, biofilter and growing bed.

Inspect: White bubbles indicate air delivery only; bubble count is not a dissolved-oxygen reading.

Maintain: Check air lines, diffusers and backup arrangements. Verify oxygen with suitable measurement.

BUYING CRITERIA

Airflow at operating depth, compatible diffusers and resilience reviewed for the living load.

Supplier links can be added by the publisher. The criteria stand independently.
