01 / Prevention starts before arrival
Source fish from a reputable supplier with a documented health and transport history. Quarantine new stock separately using a functioning, cycled system and dedicated equipment. Separation includes nets, siphons and splashes, not just a divider inside the same circulating water.
Ask the supplier or aquatic animal-health professional for species-appropriate quarantine duration, screening and acclimation. Transport temperature, dissolved gases, pH and ammonia interact; one generic “float the bag for fifteen minutes” instruction cannot cover every shipment.

02 / Prepare the receiving system
Confirm water quality, secure containment, compatible feed and a low-stress observation area before the shipment arrives. Record count, size, supplier, date and any transport concerns. Have a plan for unusual mortality and a diagnostic contact.
Follow a shipment-specific acclimation procedure. Avoid introducing transport water into the production loop where practicable under that procedure. Never release transport water or unwanted fish into natural waterways.

03 / A daily aquaponic walk
Observe before feeding, then inspect air, water movement, sump level, solids accumulation and plants. Record feed offered, appetite, deaths or removals and water readings. Check the fish at more than one time when weather or loading changes.
If fish become ill, first assess water and recent changes. Isolate affected stock as the health plan requires and seek diagnostic advice. Do not add unverified medicines, salt or pesticides to a coupled edible-plant system; product legality, fish species, biofilter effects and crop compatibility need specific review.

04 / Handle harvest and system change
Plan food-fish harvest and handling with appropriate local guidance and humane methods. Ornamental transfers need suitable receiving capacity. Update fish mass and feed after every removal so the plant nutrient balance reflects the remaining stock.
Keep edible plant harvest tools separate from fish and waste handling. Maintain records of usable crop output, fish health, feed and service labor. A healthy system should be reproducible from its records, not dependent on one person remembering every adjustment.
